The Wild Rice series is inspired by the Wild Rice growing in the San Marcos River. A family vacation in Aztec, New Mexico prompted an interest to enhance and educate the iconography of the San Marcos River by carving wild rice on my pottery. Floating down the river via kayak allowed me to see the movement of the wild rice and the variety of colors. I wanted to capture the same experiences in my pottery through the vessels I created. The vessels I create are carved by long movements resembling the wild rice, and between each wild rice, clay is removed to enhance the wild rice. Stains and several glazes have been added to create diverse colors on the wild rice vessel. If you have never experienced the wild rice on your body as you float the river, I encourage you to do so.
